Pick your strongest Chelsea starting 3-4-3: Which new signings make the cut?
Chelsea made two deadline day signings to bring their total summer intake to 6 players. But do any of them make the strongest starting XI? You decide!
Goalkeeper
This isn’t almost worth doing, but in the interest of fairness, we will go through the motion. Willy Caballero was the Blues first senior squad arrival when he joined for free after leaving Manchester City. However, Thibaut Courtois is miles ahead of his competition and should be the universal choice here.
Defence
This is where it starts to get interesting. Antonio Rudiger was the defensive recruit over the summer, coming over from Stuttgart. The move puzzled many fans as Chelsea already had the likes of Kurt Zouma and Nathan Ake. Moreover, Andreas Christensen was returning after a two-year loan spell. Zouma and Ake duly left over the summer (on loan and permanently respectively), leaving Conte with fewer options than most would have expected. Who’s in your strongest eleven?
Midfield
This was the area of the field that was strengthened most. Tiemoue Bakayoko was bought earlier in the transfer window while Danny Drinkwater was added on deadline day. The wingback slot was also bulked up with Davide Zappacosta’s last-minute arrival. Drinkwater has an opportunity to rekindle the partnership with N’Golo Kante which carried Leicester City to their unlikely Premier League triumph. Bakayoko and Kante, meanwhile, play together for their national team. Cesc Fabregas splits opinion, but does have the ability to split defences as well.
At wingback, does Zappacosta start over Victor Moses? Would you prefer Cesar Azpilicueta instead of Marcos Alonso? Pick your four-man midfield below!
Attack
Alvaro Morata was the marquee signing of the summer for Chelsea. The striker came over in a £70 million deal, albeit after Romelu Lukaku had ditched the Blues for Manchester United. Nonetheless, Conte has himself a clinical striker to lead the line. On the wings, Willian, Eden Hazard and Pedro will again contend for two positions. The Belgian will be nailed on in one, but the other is more of toss up. Are you landing on heads or tails?
