This summer transfer window was full of a number of sagas and Ross Barkley was certainly part of one of the dullest.

The England international has made it very apparent that he wishes to depart Everton in the near future, particularly as he has entered the last year of his contract.

Ronald Koeman stated that he had no intention of keeping Barkley as he knew he wasn't committing his future to the club but once the deadline had passed, the man from Merseyside was still at his boyhood club.

On deadline day, it seemed he would finally seal a transfer away from Goodison Park, with Chelsea ready to complete a £25m deal for the mercurial midfielder.

However, at the final hurdle, the deal was cancelled and Barkley was on his way back to the Toffees.

Speculation started immediately surrounding the failed transfer, with some reports suggesting that he opted to return to Everton halfway through his medical.

A sudden change of heart seemed a bit farfetched and it turns out, they were wrong.

Barkley himself took to Twitter to clear up the situation, stating that he never actually undertook a medical and simply took the sensible option to not complete the move due to a serious hamstring injury he has been carrying.

So, there you have it. Barkley will look to pursue his move in January, with Chelsea and Tottenham the likely destinations for the midfielder.

The Englishman is yet to feature for Everton this season and after the signings of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Wayne Rooney and Davy Klaassen, he may struggle for game time upon his return.

Koeman's side have started the season off in fairly good fashion, winning against Stoke and drawing away at Manchester City.

However, in their last game, Chelsea outplayed them at Stamford Bridge, highlighting that a place in the top six will still be difficult for the Toffees.

Back in August, the manager admitted that it will be difficult to better last season, saying, per Telegraph: “I know the expectations are higher than last season, but I always look to be realistic.

“We can improve and spend money but everyone can improve and is spending money. We are stronger than last season but being stronger than last season does not mean you will win against the big six because they also will be more strong.
